Five Things You Had to See Online This Week

This week in “Thanks, Internet”— Newsies get funky,a father-daughter beatbox duel, some guy made a whole record (secretly) in an Apple store, movies get recut with just the lines spoken by actors of color, and F*ck That: A Guided Meditation.

1.UPTOWN NEWSIES

Rememberthat time Christian Bale was a newspaper-selling orphan dancing in the streets to “Uptown Funk”? Well, until the brilliant mind behind the Sallie the Salad Tumblrcame along, it only existed in my wildest dreams. I’ve never been so grateful for Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars, or a troupe of dancing newsies. My only complaint is with the end — why does it have to end?

2.GIRL BEATS DAD

Like father, like daughter. Ed Cage taught his daughter Nicole Paris how to beatbox. But like so many prodigies before her, Nicole has outgrown her master. And the ear-to-ear smile on his face as she destroys him in this beatbox duel will warm even the coldest heart.

3.This Guy Recorded a Whole Album at the Apple Store

When Prince Harvey‘s laptop broke he did what most of us do: he tooka trip to the Apple Store. But Harvey didn’t get stuck waiting for an appointment at the Genius Bar. Instead, he went to work on a display computer. And for the next four months, he went back every day to record and mix his album on a demo laptop at the store. The record, appropriately titled PHATASS (Prince Harvey at the Apple Store: SoHo),is out July 26, but you can preview the track above.

(Nicole Paris might have won the beatbox award above, but Harveygets best workaround)

4.Every Single Word Spoken

Every Single Word Spoken by a Person of Color in [Mainstream Movie Title]is a new Tumblr project from Dylan Marron (Welcome to Nightvale,Whatever This Is). Marron reduces major motion pictures to just the linesspoken by actorsof color. This post is longer than most of his videos. Of the eleven films he’s tackled so far, all are less than a minute. It’s a perfect example of “show, don’t tell.” What Marron is exposing is nothing new —people of color are underrepresented in mainstream Hollywood culture. There are a whole slew of studies to prove it. But sometimes seeing is believing. Here’s hoping this project helps spark a change.

5.F*ck That

F*ck That: A Guided Meditation from Jason Headley on Vimeo.

Who knew saying f*ck that could be so relaxing? Equal parts profane and serene, Jason Headley becomes the new Jack Handey in this spot-on spoof of meditation. “Breathe in strength. Breathe out bullshit.” Now that’s the f*cking meditation we’ve been waiting for.

Thanks, Dan!
