New Year’s Resolution: Day by Day, Page by Page

The World

It’s July, and you’ve long given up on the bright shiny resolutions you made at the end of 2012. But a few Studio 360 listeners who told us about their creative resolutions are sticking with them (aided, perhaps, by our persistent nagging). Charlie Capp is keeping good on his word to turn Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner into an epic comic book.
Despite Seattle’s inviting summer weather, Charlie is making progress every day, penciling and inking and coloring his pictures for the haunting misadventure of the mariner, his crewmates, and their albatross. “It’s having that persistence to say the weather is beautiful, but I’m going to sit here so I have a complete thing to hang on the wall to get started again the next day.”
Charlie isn’t beset by hostile crewmates or “slimy things that crawl with legs upon the slimy sea.” Instead, he’s been able to use the poem to keep track of the passing months. “It ends up being a diary of sorts for the last year,” he says. “Like ‘Oh, the death ship as it approaches their ship!’ I made that when my folks visited!”
