Fallout From Miami Marlins Deal Continues

The Takeaway

It’s been a tough week for fans of the Miami Marlins baseball team, thanks to a series of disappointing trades and business decisions.  Phil Latzman, a reporter for WLRN and The Miami Herald, has been following the story.
“People are really rooting for the baseball commissioner,  Bud Selig, to ‘act in the best interest of baseball,'” Latzman says. “They’re asking him to step in and veto this trade.” There seems to be little hope for that happening though.
“Everybody wants baseball to work here,” Latzman says. Many people are feeling frustrated because they’ve invested in giving this team a stadium, and there was an implicit promise that the  Marlins  would succeed.
Phil Latzman says that the controversial trades have people thinking about the bigger picture. What’s the line between public and private when it comes to sports teams? Given the amount of public money that has gone into this team, tax payers are feeling disenfranchised by these unpopular decisions.
