Ghana and South Africa hold historic elections
A breakaway faction of South Africa’s governing African National Congress, which now calls itself the Congress of the People, is facing its first electoral test in municipal by-elections. Congress of the People candidates are standing as independent candidates because the party hasn’t been officially registered due to a legal dispute over its name. Meanwhile, the electoral commission in Ghana is due to announce the results of Sunday’s general elections later today. With two-thirds of the results in, the governing party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo, had a slender lead over his main opponent, John Atta Mills. But it’s not certain he will make it over the fifty percent barrier needed to avoid a second round of voting.
