Your New York Icons
Studio 360’s American Icons series examines time-tested works — of literature, music, film, architecture, design and visual art — that have achieved the status of an “icon” in American culture. Now, we’re focusing the Icons series on Studio 360’s hometown of New York City and creating a series of audio documentaries about New York Icons. But we need your help!
What are the works of art, the venues and the institutions that have not only shaped the character of the city, but also helped form American culture? From the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in Alphabet City, which launched a community of performers and poets, to the Silence = Death logo that became the symbol of the AIDS crisis, to the lush, architectural interior of the Kings Theatre in Flatbush, to the unassuming high-rise at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, widely considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop. These are just some of the New York Icons that have become part of our national consciousness.
