Todd Akin, the Republican Congressman running for U.S. Senate, is resisting growing calls by fellow Republicans to withdraw from the race in the wake of comments on Sunday where he said women who are “legitimately raped” have ways of shutting down their own reproductive systems so they don’t get pregnant.

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin, (R-Mo.) a candidate for the U.S. Senate, over the weekend explained that he would ban abortion and didn’t believe an exception was necessary in cases of rape — because he’s heard that women’s bodies can shut down their reproductive systems and prevent becoming pregnant if they’re “legitimately” raped.

The controversial Arizona immigration law that was largely put on hold because of court action should receive a final verdict any day now. In the next two weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court is expected to issue a verdict in that case as well as one in the case of President Barack Obama’s healthcare reform law.

A Michigan State Representative has lost her speaking privileges on the floor of that legislative body. She’s accused of not maintaining decorum when she used the word vagina in her speech over a women’s reproductive rights bill.
