Homophobia in Russia is growing more violent, in part because American evangelists have turned their attention to combating gay rights overseas, says Christopher Dickey, the Paris bureau chief for The Daily Beast.

This past week Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina published an essay that has sent his Twitter feed into overdrive. In the essay he shares that he is gay. Coming out as a gay man in a country where being gay is illegal could be dangerous but that, according to writer Wainaina, is precisely the point.

Vancouver’s openly gay deputy mayor, Tim Stevenson, is heading to Sochi to meet with the IOC to lobby for gay rights to be added to the Olympic charter.
