There’s a vibrant tradition of Jewish vegetarian cooking that goes back decades, if not longer. But even if it drops brisket and roast chicken, it’s not about raw kale and juice cleanses. Think more butter and sour cream.

For three years now, Vernon Yates has been trying to catch a wild monkey that’s made the streets of Tampa, Fla., his home. Sure, Yates has captured and kept countless other mischievous or troubled animals in that time, but this silver macaque has somehow eluded him.

Rüstem Altinküpe, a practicing Muslim in Germany, has operated a butcher shop in Germany since 1988. He practiced halal slaughter, the form of animal slaughter required by observant Muslims. Germany banned halal slaughter in 1995, but Altinküpe challenged the ban and won in 2002. Still, his butcher shop is idled as Germany bureaucracy throws up more barriers.

With 48 animals, some of them extremely endangered, dead in Ohio, animal rights activists are agitating for stricter laws concerning people who keep big cats and other exotic animals as pets.
