Economic boom expected from same-sex marriages

The Takeaway

Story from PRI’s The Takeaway. For more, listen to the audio above.

Now that New York has become the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage, thousands of gay and lesbian couples will have the chance to say their “I Dos” in the Empire State. And with that announcement, wedding planners around the city are predicting a big boom in business.

Nicky Reinhard has been planning weddings for over 10 years. She’s ecstactic about the potential economic windfall for the wedding industry, especially in these tough economic times.

And, whether it’s an extravagant or modest affair, Reinhard says at the end of the day, all couples want the same things: “They want their friends and family to be there, they want it to be a fair representation of who they are as a couple, they want it to be romantic … most importantly it’s for people to witness the commitment that you’re giving each other, but then it’s just a fantastic party.”
