Golden Venture: 20 Years After a Tragic Voyage

The World

Katja Heinemann, a German photographer based in Brooklyn, is documenting the aftermath of the tragic Golden Venture voyage.

Twenty years ago this month, on June 6, 1993, a freighter ran aground on a sandbank offshore from New York.

The ship's cargo included 286 Chinese smuggled-in migrants.

The tragedy, which made world headlines, left 10 people dead as they attempted to reach shore in freezing ocean water.
