Sequins, feathers and fur have this year’s Olympic figure skaters taking heat for the drama behind their costumes. Last month, two Russian teammates were accused of cultural insensitivity for costumes and makeup meant to make them look like Australian Aborigines. But first and foremost, says fashion designer Nick Verreos, their costumes were hideously ugly.

Verreos explains what goes into making a good costume for the ice and who has managed to hit (and miss) the mark in the 2010 Olympics and in the games of the past.
