Gabrielle Giffords in Newtown to speak with Sandy Hook families (VIDEO)

Gabrielle Giffords, the former Arizona Congresswoman shot in the head outside a Tucson grocery store almost exactly two years ago, visited the site of another American gun tragedy today in Newtown, Conn.

Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelley, met with Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and School Superintendent Janet Robinson before speaking with family members of those affected by the Sandy Hook school shooting.

“Our horrible event of Dec. 14 has some of those same tragic elements as experienced in the Tucson event that so harmed Ms. Giffords and took the lives of innocent citizens,” Newtown first selectman Pat Llodra told USA Today.

“I believe that our community will see Ms. Giffords as an ally in the efforts to draw attention to gun control legislation.”

Giffords arrives in Connecticut three weeks after 20-year-old Adam Lanza’s murderous rampage, Reuters reported.

He shot his mother as she slept then drove her car to Sandy Hook school where he opened fire, killing six adults and 20 first graders before taking his own life.

Giffords was one of 13 people shot and wounded on January 8, 2011 outside a campaign stop in Tucson.

Gunman Jared Lee Loughner also killed six others. He pleaded guilty and received seven consecutive life sentences.

Giffords is now partially blind, has a paralyzed right arm and lives with a brain injury, The Associated Press said.

She was to attend a private meeting with family members today.

On Thursday, Giffords met with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to speak about gun control.
