Software tycoon John McAfee arrested in Guatemala (UPDATE)

Software tycoon John McAfee, who was arrested in Guatemala Thursday for entering the country illegally, has been hospitalized. 

McAfee was reportedly rushed to the hospital after suffering two mild heart attacks, his lawyer said, according to Reuters. He was carried out of an immigration service cottage on a stretcher.

He was being detained after crossing illegally into Guatemala from Belize. 

The BBC reported that McAfee had been refused asylum by the Guatemalan government. He will likely be deported to Belize, where he was wanted for questioning in connection with the death of his neighbor.

McAfee's lawyer, Telesforo Guerra told local radio, "We are going to go to the human rights prosecutor to lodge a complaint and file an injunction against the foreign minister for detaining him without studying his asylum request," according to the BBC.

The Associated Press reported earlier that McAfee had been taken into custody at a hotel by immigration and Interpol agents.

Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla said he was taken to an old, three-story building used to house migrants who enter the country illegally.

Before his arrest, the eccentric millionaire software tycoon had said he regarded Guatemala as a safe haven and he would be seeking asylum there, ABC News reported. 

"Thank God I am in a place where there is some sanity," said McAfee, 67, before his arrest.

"I chose Guatemala carefully."

ABC News said McAfee believed he was safe in Guatemala and that the locals aren't surprised when he says the Belizean government is out to kill him.

"Instead of going, 'You're crazy,' they go, 'Yeah, of course they are,'" he said. "It's like, finally, I understand people who understand the system here."

His arrest is the latest twist in a bizarre tale. McAfee has been on the run from police in Belize for almost a month, where he is wanted for questioning in the death of Gregory Faull, who lived next door to McAfee on Ambergris Caye, an island off the coast of Belize. He claims he is being framed by police, and during his run from the law, he has been updating his progress on a blog.

According to the New York Times, he resurfaced in Guatemala on Tuesday and was dressed in a suit, and his blond curls had been dyed dark brown.

A blog post in McAfee's name said he was meeting with Guatemalan officials.

"I apologize for all of the misdirections over the past few days," the post reads. "It was not easy to exit Belize and required many supporters in many countries."
