South Africa: Linkin Park fan killed in Cape Town concert accident

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A woman died and 19 people were injured outside a Linkin Park concert in Cape Town, South Africa when an advertising tower collapsed. 

The scaffolding outside Green Point stadium came down in high winds just before the concert Thursday night. 

“There were pillars branded with the sponsor’s logo, the wind got hold of it and it fell over," a Linkin Park fan told Eyewitness News.

The US rock band is on a tour of South Africa, and scheduled to play a concert in Johannesburg on November 10.

Linkin Park said it only learned of the death after the concert.

"Following our performance tonight at Cape Town Stadium, we were advised that several people were injured as a result of the collapse of an advertising tower erected by Lucozade [a brand of energy drink] in the parking area outside the venue," a statement on Linkin Park's website said.

"We wish to express our deep sadness and concern for those injured and our heartfelt condolences to the family of the fan who died as a result of her injuries."

"Though we have had no relationship with the sponsor or the entity responsible for erecting the structure, we take the safety of our fans very seriously and our thoughts are with all of those who were affected by this tragedy," the statement said.

Lucozade South Africa posted a message on Twitter expressing "shock and extreme sadness about the accident last night." 

"Our immediate concern is for the victims and their families and our thoughts and prayers are with them," the tweet said.

Police are investigating the incident, the South African Press Association reported.
