Ex-Libya spy chief Abdullah al-Senussi ‘charged’ in Mauritania

GlobalPost

Former Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi, who fled Libya after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi, has been charged in Mauritania with illegally entering the country.

Senussi, was arrested at Nouakchott airport in March after flying in from Morocco. Libya, France and the International Criminal Court want him extradited to face charges of crimes against humanity, according to the BBC.

Two months ago Libya’s Deputy Prime Miniter Mustafa Abushagur said Mauritania had agreed to extradite Senussi, but there was no confirmation from the Mauritanian authorities and Mauritanian officials said Monday he faces trial locally for using false travel papers.

A judicial source told Reuters that “Abdullah al-Senussi has been interviewed for the first time by the state prosecutor. He should face trial soon for illegal entry into Mauritanian territory.”

A separate source told the Agence France Presse that Senussi “was charged and put in prison, in a cell specially prepared ahead of the trial, whose date has yet to be set.”
