A marked increase in oil production and decrease in consumption has might just have the U.S. on the road to something advocated for by every president since Richard Nixon: energy independence. In 2011, the country imported just 45 percent of liquid fuels, down from a record 60 percent in 2005. Energy independence has the potentitial to completely reshape American foreign policy and the U.S. economy, yet environmental concerns persist.
