Nursing home meth lab kills 1, injures 6

A meth lab that exploded inside an Ohio nursing home Sunday killed one and sent six to hospital, The Star Beacon in Ashtabula reported.

The lab was reportedly set up by two visitors to the nursing home, who were both injured in the blast.

“I was taking a break, and I looked through the window and I saw an explosion of fire,” nurse Deanna Bigley told the paper. “There was this guy and he was engulfed in flames. One of our residents put him out, but then the fire started up and he had to be put out again.”

Police are baffled as to how the lab ended up in the home. A lawyer for the Park Haven nursing home declined comment.

Moreover, the one person being credited for saving lives is a 28-year-old pregnant nurse.

Bigley said Kristy Hance, who was hurt during the fire, returned to the home several times to help residents escape.

The nursing home has 31 rooms, according to reports, and nearly 40 residents.

“She just kept going back in to get people,” Bigley said, The Star Beacon reported. “The smoke was thick and black, but she went back in to help.”

Three residents and two non-residents were hurt, and the two visitors faced drug charges, The Associated Press said.

The man died Monday, Ashtabula fire Chief Ron Pristera said, according to AP.

Firefighters said working sprinklers helped save lives.

“It was the pop bottle, or shake-and-bake style meth lab,” Pristera told WKYC TV. “It was unusual (to) say the least. It was not something we expected.”
