Van der Sloot sentenced to 28 years by Peru court

Joran Van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen, was sentenced to 28 years in prison by a Peruvian court on Friday for killing Stephany Flores in Lima in 2010, Reuters reported.

According to the Associated Press, the sentencing came exactly five years after an Alabama girl, 18-year-old Natalee Holloway, disappeared after being seen spending time with Van der Sloot in Aruba.

Van der Sloot apologized on Wednesday for killing Flores, a 21-year-old business student, after meeting her in a Lima casino. He accepted all charges filed against him.

According to Fox News, Van der Sloot was also fined roughly $74,000 by a three-judge panel in Lima.

Holloway's family is renewing their effor to bring Van der Sloot into the United States to try him for her 2005 disappearance, AP reported.
