France dedicated the monument on Oct. 28, 1886, to celebrate "the Alliance of the two Nations in achieving the Independence of the United States of America and attests their abiding friendship."
The first sight of millions of immigrants, Lady Liberty has become an American icon. She has appeared on coinage, stamps and in replicas around the world.
