Group asks Brazil to halt Amazon dam

GlobalPost

The Organization of American States has sent a letter to the Brazilian government asking for the “immediate suspension” of work on the Belo Monte dam. The controversial project has garnered opposition from indigenous groups and international stars like Bill Clinton and Avatar director James Cameron. The government has denied opposition claims and recently granted preliminary approval to start clearing trees in preparation for building what will be the world’s third largest hydropower plant. The recent letter asks the government to stop construction until they consult with affected indigenous communities and take steps to protect them, noting that otherwise the government could be violating international law.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry responded by saying it was “perplexed” by the letter and called the request “hasty and unjustifiable.” And the fight goes on.
