Twenty-two years ago this month, a towering figure in Haiti was gunned down outside the radio station he ran. Even today, Jean Dominique is a household name for Haitians. His station, called “Radio Haiti” was unique. It was on the air for decades, but shut down soon after Dominique’s death. And it’s politically aware programs were broadcast not only in French, the language of the rich and powerful, but also in Haitian Kreyòl, the universal language, spoken by rich and poor alike.
