Afghan female fighters served with US troops and fled after their withdrawal

During the 20-year US-led war in Afghanistan, there were a number of Afghan female soldiers who fought alongside American troops. Many were able to evacuate after US troops left the country in 2021. The World’s host Marco Werman talks with Andrea Smardon, host of the podcast “Stranger Becomes Neighbor,” about Sima, an Afghan woman who was part of a special forces unit of elite female fighters who worked with US soldiers in Afghanistan. The conversation is followed by Andrea’s report on Sima’s escape to the US and her life today.
