Panama’s Supreme Court this week declared that the contract for a major copper mine in the country was unconstitutional. The president immediately made moves to close the mine, operated by a Canadian company, First Quantum. The decision follows more than a month of protests that had shut down roads and commerce in Panama. They were some of the largest environmental demonstrations Latin America has seen for a long time.
