Protests in the Khabarovsk region in Russia’s far east are now in their third week. Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets, showing unprecedented resistance to the Kremlin. The protests started earlier this month with the arrest of the Khabarovsk regional governor Sergei Furgal. He was charged with murder and attempted murder, but most analysts and protesters believe these are trumped-up charges and that he was arrested for political reasons.
