After childhood stardom as an Indian classical dance prodigy, Los Angeles native Raja Kumari tried to break into the hip-hop scene and was told to tone down her Indianness. So, she went to India, where she found success and fame, touring to large crowds, headlining music festivals, and appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone India. But she soon found that with cross-cultural fame comes twice the potential for culturally insensitive mistakes. The World’s Rupa Shenoy reports.
