Lapland’ fragile thaw

The World

Lapland is often described as Europe’s last great wilderness. It stretches across Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia — way above the Arctic Circle. It’s the home of the Sámi:  Europe’s only Indigenous people who still live off the land. But life for the Sámi people is changing. Climate change is affecting the Arctic more than any other part of the Earth, and it’s damaging the Sámi people’s traditional livelihoods. But that’s not the only threat. As temperatures rise, new business opportunities are opening up in the Arctic, which many Sámi people say is putting more pressure on their way of life. The BBC’s Erika Benke went to Finnish Lapland and sent this report.
