Demonstrators in Libya have been calling for democratic reform, so for today’s Geo Quiz, we’re taking a closer look. Anti-government protesters are demanding an end to Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Much of the action is taking place in the capital, Tripoli, in the west and the city of Benghazi, in the east. Security forces opened fire on protesters there over the weekend. Benghazi is Libya’s second city, located on the Mediterranean coast. It’s the capital of a key region in Libya’s political history. The former Libyan king, Idris Al-Senussi hailed from this area. He was overthrown by Gaddafi in 1969.

Today some protesters raised the flag of the deposed monarchy in Benghazi. Can you name the eastern region which has Benghazi for its capital?
Geo Answer:

Anchor Lisa Mullins talks to Mary-Jane Deeb, Chief of the African and Middle Eastern Division at the Library of Congress about the Libyan region of Cyrenaica, the answer for our quiz. Cyrenaica has played major roles in the country’s political history.
