Divorce, Central American style

The World

Today’s Geo Quiz is ripped from the headlines. We’re looking for a Central American country where a constitutional ban is kicking in. In this country, members of the president’s family are legally banned from running as presidential candidates.

Simple enough — but the First Lady in this case has a plan to get around the prohibition. She’s announced a run for President in the next election. Technically, she’s family. So she filed for divorce.

Where’s this happening?

Answer: Guatemala! Sandra Torres said last week she was seeking to divorce President Alvaro Colom, so she could run herself but now a court in Guatemala has ordered a halt to the divorce proceedings of the country’s first couple. The BBC’s Julian Miglierini is following the story from Mexico City.
