Supreme Court Justice Ginsburg will conduct same-sex wedding

Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first person in her position to oversee a same-sex marriage on Saturday, as she officiates in the wedding of a long-term friend. 

The 80-year-old Ginsburg was tapped to conduct the marriage of John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts President Michael M. Kaiser to his economist fiancee, John Roberts, writes NBC News.

The private ceremony will be held at the Kennedy Center, which Ginsburg frequently visits as an opera-lover. Same sex marriage is legal in the District of Columbia, and is currently permitted in thirteen US states. 

The Supreme Court justice has come out in favor of same-sex marriage in the past, most memorably in March as the court heard arguments on a California gay marriage ban. 

During the hearing, Ginsburg observed that a federal law limiting rights to gay couples would create “two kinds of marriage — the full marriage, and then this sort of skim-milk marriage," according to Bloomberg. 

In July, on the same sex marriage topic, Ginsburg expressed her approval of the US public's growing acceptance of the practice to Reuters. "I think the country is doing remarkably well. I don't think anyone could have predicted this," she said.
