His handpicked successor Nicolas Maduro eked out a victory in yesterday’s presidential vote.
But it was much closer than expected, 50.7 to 49.1 percent.
The opposition candidate, Henrique Capriles, called for a recount, citing what he says were voting irregularities.
Reporter Phil Gunson in Caracas said the narrow margin was surprising, considering Maduro’s huge advantage.
