Brazilian prostitutes prepare for World Cup 2014 with language classes

Prostitutes in Brazil are preparing for the influx of foreign visitors to the World Cup 2014 by brushing up on their language skills.

Sex workers in the city of Belo Horizonte have begun taking advantage of free language classes organized by their trade union – yes, their trade union.

The Associated Press reported that Cida Vieira, president of the Association of Prostitutes, told reporters that 20 have already signed up for the classes.

She expects hundreds more to join out of the organization's 4000 members.

“It will be important for the girls who will be able to use English to let their clients know what they are charging and learn about what turns them on,” Vieira told the AP.

“And for the same reasons we are also thinking of offering free French and Italian classes."

Classes will begin in March and last eight months.

Belo Horizonte will host a number of matches for both the Confederations Cup and the World Cup.

“There will be an influx of prostitutes matching the demand that World Cup fans would bring to the cities,” Kamy Akhaven, president and managing editor of ProCon.org, told ABC News.

“That trend occurred again in South Africa where they were there again to meet the demands of mostly men–to watch arguable the world’s greatest sporting event.”

Prostitution is legal in Brazil.
