US Open: Serena Williams defeats Victoria Azarenka in women’s singles final

Serena Williams defeated Victoria Azarenka in the US Open women’s singles final today, capturing her 15th Grand Slam title and fourth crown at Flushing Meadows, the Agence France-Presse reported.

No. 4-ranked Williams of the United States clinched the title 6-2 2-6 7-5 in what Reuters described as a “dramatic final.”

The Associated Press reported that No. 1-ranked Azarenka of Belarus got within two points of winning the championship, but Williams managed to regain her composure just in time and won the last four games.

Williams' victory cements her status as one of the greatest tennis players the world has ever seen, becoming the first woman to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same season since she did it a decade ago, the AP noted.
