Sinead O’Connor cancels tour, cites battle with bipolar disorder

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor announced today she was canceling her 2012 tour on the advice of doctors.

In a statement posted to her website, O’Connor wrote: “With enormous regret I must announce that I have to cancel all touring for the year as am very unwell due to bi polar disorder.”

“As you all know I had a very serious breakdown between December and March and I had been advised by my doctor not to go on tour but didn't want to 'fail' or let anyone down as the tour was already booked to coincide with album release. So very stupidly I ignored his advice to my great detriment, attempting to be stronger than I actually am.”

O’Connor apologized and said she still hoped to appear at the Curtis Mayfield tribute in New York in July.

E! Online reported in September that O’Connor had sent out “increasingly disturbing” tweets including at least one in which she contemplated suicide.

A distraught fan called the police who visited her home in County Wicklow, Ireland, according to E!

According to The Associated Press, O’Connor had in December announced her separation from Barry Herridge, a therapist, after 16 days of marriage.
