Homer Wright, 80, was arrested for shooting 19-year-old Anthony Robinson after Wright caught him breaking into his home on Monday, the Chicago Tribune reported

Wright, who owns a bar next door to his home, was released Tuesday on $10,000 bail, but his neighbors and fellow business owners on Chicago's South Side are "outraged" that Wright was charged for defending himself, according to the Huffington Post

Anthony Robinson attempted to break into Wright's South Morgan Street home to steal liquor at about 6:30 a.m. when Wright shot him in the leg, police told the Chicago Sun-Times. Wright is a convicted felon and is not permitted to own a gun, which is why he was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, according to police.

"If somebody breaks into a place where they are not supposed to be, I bet something will happen," Wright told the Tribune, adding that he was angry about the arrest. "That's wrong. [It's] unjust that I can't protect me."

"Where in America can you not defend yourself?" Darryl Smith of the Englewood Political Task Force told ABC 7 Chicago. "And because you have a felony is your life less valuable than any other person? Had he not had a gun, we would be here for another reason, because he was beaten to death."

Robinson, who was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his leg and charged with felony burglary, is still being held on $150,000 bail, according to the Huffington Post.

The incident comes amidst national outrage over the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, whose killer George Zimmerman avoided charges by arguing that he acted out of self-defense.
