Pope Benedict XVI to have his own scent designed by celebrity perfume maker

He is known for wearing Gucci sunglasses and red Prada loafers, now Pope Benedict XVI has his own scent.

According to reports, the Vatican has commissioned celebrity perfume-maker Silvana Casoli to create a signature cologne for Benedict — once named Esquire magazine's "accessorizer of the year."

Casoli, who has created fragrances for Madonna, Sting and King Juan Carlos of Spain among others, is known for designing scents for use by both men and women, ABC News wrote, adding that his fragrances have names like Chocolat Bambola (Chocolate doll) and Vanilla Bourbon. 

Casoli had designed two other colognes for use by the Roman Catholic Church, called "Water of Hope" and "Water of Faith" — scents for priests who embarked on the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, according to MSNBC.

But the new one would be worn only by the Pope, London's Daily Telegraph reported, and would not be available in stores.

According to ABC, Casoli told the Roman daily Il Messaggero that while the exact formula was top secret, the fragrance had hints of lime, verbena and grass, reflecting the pontiff's love of nature.

The Telegraph went further, saying Casoli was inspired by Benedict's "love of the forests and animals in his native Bavaria, as well as peace and tranquility."

Casoli, the paper added, almost pulled out of the project at one point, so daunting was the prospect of accurately reflecting the German pontiff's personality.

According to the New York Daily News, the Vatican does not comment on the pope’s product choices.

However, aides have denied that Benedict wears Prada shoes.
