Chardon school shootings: Third student dies (UPDATES)

A third student has died from injuries received when a teenager opened fire at Chardon High School in Ohio on Monday. Demetrius Hewlin, 16, died around midday today, USA Today reported.

Meanwhile, the suspect, Chardon High student T.J. Lane, 17, appeared at the Geauga County Juvenile Court in Chardon this afternoon to determine whether he would stay in custody pending charges, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. It is customary for a teenage suspect to be treated as a juvenile until prosecutors decide whether to charge him or her as an adult, an attorney familiar with the case told the Los Angeles Times.

Lane admitted to firing 10 shots with a .22 caliber pistol and told investigators that he chose his victims at random, Geauga County Prosecutor David Joyce said at the court hearing, according to CBS News. Judge Timothy Grendell ordered Lane to be held at the Portage-Geauga Juvenile Detention Center in Ravenna, Ohio, for at least the next 15 days, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Prosecutors have until Mar. 1 to file charges.

The media was forbidden to photograph or film the faces of Lane or his relatives, and the judge instructed Joyce and Lane's lawyer Robert Farinacci not to comment on the case, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported. Joyce was permitted to make statements at a press conference after the hearing, and he said he would seek to try Lane as an adult.

Two other students died and two were injured in the attack, which took place in the cafeteria at the school, Reuters reported. Daniel Parmertor, 16, died Monday afternoon, and Russell King Jr., 17, was declared dead early this morning, according to the the LA Times.

One victim, a 17-year-old boy in serious condition, remains in the hospital, USA Today reported. The fifth shooting victim, an 18-year-old girl, was released this afternoon, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

The incident is the worst school shooting at a US high school in 11 months, and the worst in Ohio since late 2007, the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence told Reuters.

“[Lane’s] family wanted me to convey to the citizens of Geauga County and northeastern Ohio that the family is devastated by this most recent event,” Farinacci said in a statement to the media released before King and Hewlin died. “They want to give their most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who passed and their continuing prayers are with all those who were injured."

The entire school district remains closed for a second day today. Classes in the school district will not fully resume until Friday, school officials said, according to Reuters.
