What foreign films should you watch this summer?

We spoke to Matt Holzman, a movie critics and the producer and host of First Take from KCRW, about popular and critically acclaimed films from abroad. Here are three films he says not to miss this summer: 

Victoria 

The German film "Victoria" follows the night of a young Spanish pianist of the same name, stranded in Berlin. Victoria befriends a group of young men in a nightclub and is quickly and unwittingly swept up in a heist.

The film was shot in a single take in 20 diffferent locations, all over Berlin. It won best picture and five other awards at the German Film Awards festival in June. 

The Second Mother 

"The Second Mother" is a Brazilian film. It tells the story of Val, a live-in housekeeper in an upper-class home in Brazil, as she struggles to navigate between being a mother to her own daughter, and the children she has nannied their whole lives. When her estranged daughter comes to visit the upper-class home in which Val lives and works, the balance of power is thrown into relief, and everyone tries to adjust.

The film was shown at Sundance.

Beasts of No Nation

"Beasts of No Nation" was filmed in Ghana, and is set in an unnamed West African country. It follows the life of a child-soldier and his tumultuous yet powerful relationship with the commander who kidnapped him. The film will be released on Netflix and select theaters in October.
