Women around the world can relate to #BeingFemaleInNigeria

GlobalPost

It's tough being a woman in many parts of the world — and Nigeria is among the toughest. Some Nigerian women took to Twitter on Tuesday to highlight the day-to-day challenges they face, and the response was a pretty good indication of how many other women can relate.

According to Buzzfeed, a tiny book club in Abuja, Nigeria started tweeting their stories to #beingfemaleinnigeria, inviting people to tweet about the discrimination they've faced. It didn't take long for it to trend in Nigeria, and then globally.

Many of the tweets described issues that women around the world face, such as being judged for their value as a wife. Others underlined problems specific to Nigerian society.

Nigeria is ranked 118 out of 142 countries in a 2014 gender gap index by the World Economic Forum. The index noted that Nigerian women have particularly low literacy rates and education levels compared to other nations.

GlobalPost picked out some of the most powerful #beingfemaleinnigeria tweets to share.
