Beach Culture

Here in Boston we are preparing for a snow ... a #snowapocalypse or #snowmageddon. Whatever, there is going to be a lot of snow. So, I've been following photographer David Alan Harvey's instagram pics out of Rio de Janeiro with pleasure. Here he is at Leme Beach, where it was 91 degrees on Monday.

Leme Beach, Rio de Janeiro. It's Sunday and all beach games are full on...A couple of times here on Instagram I have described Rio as being a Shakespearean stage. Geographically and demographically it is for sure. Do I like the beach here? Sure. I am a born again beach bum. I live at the beach. Yet Rio is more than a beach. An eclectic cultural mix flows to the beaches here and the beach is a literal melting pot. Democratic. Anybody can go to any beach. So you see a slice of the whole demographic in one place. I am working on BeachGames my zine on the games people play. For the next three weeks I will be posting this work in real time daily.. #rio #leme #copacabana #beachgames #burnmagazine #leica #monochrom

Antarctic Negatives

Whatever the outcome of the snow expected to hit the East Coast at least it's not as bad as the freezing conditions of Antarctica where it's pretty much always extreme. But, Antarctica sure photographs nicely. The New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust found a box of 22 never-before-seen negatives depicting Antarctic explorers a century ago.

By the way, if you like found negative treasures, check out these amazing WWII pictures just recovered by the Rescue Film Project.

Elder statesmen

Following the death of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah on Friday, the Wall Street Journal's interactive team did some digging in and found that the age of leaders around the Middle East getting up there. And, this may prove to be a major destablizing factor in the years to come.
