Rediscovering My Musical Language Skills

In December 2013, teacher and sound designer Gabriel Walker resolved to get back into music, with the goal of forming a band and performing a six-song set by the end of 2014.

April Update:

The Louisville music scene is opening up for me.I’ve begun an Internet musical collaboration with Louisville singer/songwriter Jenrose Fitzgerald. Working with Jenrose on original material (inspired by the American Songbook) is helping me rediscover my musical language skills. Demos of standards and original material will be posted as we progress towards the final performance. Here are some preliminary charts (sketches really) of works in progress.

I tried to contact my singing voice only to find it had moved, and left no forwarding address. Having tracked it down, I find it now resides in a much smaller abode. My range has gone from 3 octaves to a mere 1 octave. Pitch control and placement are sketchy. Oi! Vocal exercises have begun in earnest. I’d be happy with 2 octaves and solid intonation. My goal is to be a solid backup singer.

I left Denver in late July, came to Maysville, Kentucky to teach and to be with family for the winter. The plan was to seek out a musical experience in Louisville come Spring. All of a sudden, Studio 360 is tracking the process. But hey, it’s not like the whole country is listening to all this unfold. No pressure…
