What Russians Make of President Putin’s Syria Op-Ed

Lawmakers in Washington have responded negatively to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s op-ed in the New York Times about the Syria crisis.

The White House has not officially responded to the piece but other US officials have discounted it.

Putin’s editorial, a direct personal appeal to Americans, argued a US military strike against Syria could unleash a new wave of terrorism.

The op-ed comes as President Barack Obama threatened strikes in Syria, accusing the Syrian regime of killing hundreds in a poison-gas attack on August 21.

In the New York Times article, Putin said a US strike “will result in more innocent victims and escalation, potentially spreading the conflict far beyond Syria’s borders.”
