Over the weekend, hundreds of thousands of Egyptian Islamists took to the streets in a show of support for President Mohamed Morsi, who was removed from office by the military earlier this month.
At the same time, the interim government has been cracking down on the Muslim Brotherhood and arresting officials.
U.S. authorities have called on Egyptian’s interim leadership to release Morsi and to discontinue with their arbitrary arrests.
But Morsi’s supporters say the Obama administration’s criticism of the arrests and violence against Muslim Brotherhood supporters amounts to lip service.
Robin Wright, distinguished scholar at The Wilson Center in Washington, weighs in.
