Two people are dead following a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse near Montreal.

The blast at B.E.M. Fireworks just before 9 a.m. Thursday rattled homes in Coteau-du-Lac and sent up a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles outside the city, The Globe and Mail reported.

Nearby homes and a campground were evacuated, and an adjacent highway was shut down.

Provincial police told The Associated Press two bodies were found in the wreckage, but did not immediately identify them.

Roland Desforges told The Globe and Mail he was about to have breakfast with his wife when the blast slammed his dog into the wall.

“In seconds there was nothing left,” he said of the plant.

According to its website, B.E.M. has been designing and manufacturing pyrotechnics and fireworks for 25 years.
