On Location Ankara: Turkey’s great divide

ANKARA, Turkey — Arzu Özkaya never thought she would see massive demonstrations against what she calls an authoritarian government, but she long hoped for them. Now, every day in the late afternoon she heads to the center of Ankara and protests till late at night.

Sule Kaleli says she also feels threatened — by the protesters. She sees them as descendants of the army-backed secularists who ruled Turkey until the conservative Justice and Development Party of Prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan swept elections in 2002.
