The AIC was founded in the wake of the September 11 attacks, when Muslims in America – or people thought to be Muslim – were the objects of scrutiny and suspicion. The non-profit has tried to build bridges among people of different faiths and ethnicities.

As Weddady told The World's Marco Werman, Monday's explosions at the Boston Marathon finishing line occurred only a block away from the AIC offices.
