White smoke billowed over the Sistine Chapel as the faithful cheered for Pope Francis I in rain at St. Peter's Square on Tuesday.
The 115 electors — cardinals under the age of 80 — locked themselves in the Vatican on Monday after mass at St. Peter's Basilica, and will remain cut off from the world until their work is done.
Outside the Vatican on St. Peter's square, many of the faithful waited and prayed in the rain, hoping to see white smoke issue from the chimney on top the Sistine Chapel, telling them that their new spiritual leader has been chosen.
