Queen Elizabeth II has been forced to cancel an official trip to Wales after suffering a stomach bug, Buckingham Palace said Friday.

The 86-year-old had been due to attend a military ceremony in the south Wales city of Swansea on Saturday but will rest at her official residence in Windsor, Reuters reported.

"She will be assessed in the coming days but her majesty is currently spending the weekend at Windsor as usual," said a palace spokesman, referring to her official residence.

The spokesman said the Queen was suffering symptoms of gastroenteritis, an infection of the stomach and bowel caused by bacteria or viruses.

The official engagement in Swansea included the Queen presenting St David's Day leeks to soldiers, London's Mirror reported.

She was then invited to a reception with members of the battalion and their families, before lunch at the George Hall.

The Queen appeared in good health earlier in the week when she presented a host of Olympic stars with honours during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday, The Guardian reported.

The monarch is scheduled to visit Rome, Italy next week with the Duke of Edinburgh, but it is not known whether that trip will go ahead.
