A Tony Award nominee, Franklin is perhaps best remembered for her role as an independent-minded divorcee with two teenager daughters on "One Day at a Time," which aired on CBS from 1975 to 1984, according to the Washington Post.

Valerie Bertinelli, who played one of Franklin's daughters, told CNN her "heart is breaking" at the news.

"Bonnie has always been one of the most important women in my life and was a second mother to me," Bertinelli told CNN. "She taught me how to navigate this business and life itself with grace and humor, and to always be true to yourself."

The two reunited on the small screen in 2011 when the Franklin played the mother of Bertinelli's character's boyfriend on Hot in Cleveland, according to People.com.
