The new Bulgarian Orthodox Patriarch was chosen at the national church council on Sunday, February 24 for a first time since 1971 between three candidates: Metropolitan Neophyte of Ruse, Metropolitan Galaktion of Stara Zagora and Metropolitan Gabriel of Lovech.The Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim, who led the Church since 1971, passed away on November 6, 2012, at the age of 98.
