Mexico: 6 detained over Acapulco gang rape of Spanish tourists confess to sexual assaults

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Six people detained over the gang rape of six Spanish women in Acapulco in the southern Mexican state of Guerrero have confessed to the sexual assaults, CNN Mexico reported Wednesday.

Mexico Attorney General Jesús Murillo Karam announced the confessions at a news conference also attended by Guerrero State Governor Angel Aguirre, El Universal reported.

Aguirre was quoted by Milenio as saying authorities had no intention of arresting “scapegoats” or “innocent people “ over the brutal attack earlier this month in one of Mexico’s most famous tourist destinations.

“We are acting responsibly and efficiently and effectively to clear this bitter chapter in the history of our tourist port of Acapulco," Aguirre said.

The six Spanish tourists were raped in their beach bungalow in Acapulco on February 4 by a group of armed men.

During the hours-long brutal attack, the five masked men raped the women after tying up their six male friends with phone cords and bathing suit straps.

Before the attack, the Spanish Embassy had warned tourists that the resort city was one of Mexico's "risk zones" and "heightened caution is advised."

Acapulco is located in the state of Guerrero, which has been the scene of a violent turf war between rival drug gangs fighting for control of the region.
